Mapping electrospraying process

Like electrospinning, electrospraying was already discovered more than a century ago. Thanks to Fenn’s Nobel Prize in 2002, introducing electrospraying as a soft ionization method for large biomolecules, the method gained a lot of popularity. In recent years, electrospraying has demonstrated a lot of potential for the preparation of amorphous solid dispersions to improve the oral bioavailability of poorly soluble drug compounds.

Electrospraying process parameters

Aiming to reduce the often used trial-and-error approach in setting up electrospraying process, researchers of the University of Leuven investigated the influence and interplay of different solution formulation and process parameters. Commonly used polymer solutions were electrosprayed to map out the crucial parameter ranges to obtain a stable process and hence reproducible micro and nanoparticles. Their experiments evaluated the importance of balanced process parameters, as distance between the tip of the nozzle and collector, applied voltage and flow rate. Additionally, they demonstrated the importance of selecting the appropriate polymer concentration and solvent type with their accompanying viscosity and conductivity.

Combining these findings and extremely crucial in combination with a stable climate conditions during spraying, will assist in a faster design of further reproducible electrospinning protocols.
